The New Zealand courier, express, and parcel (CEP) market covers the pick-up, sorting, line-haul and delivery of parcels, documents and light freight, from standard domestic parcels and time-definite express to same-day deliveries and cross-border shipments. Customers range from online retailers and small exporters to hospitals, manufacturers and households sending parcels through retail hubs, pickup points and doorstep delivery.
In 2025, the market is valued at USD 1650.00 million and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 5.10%, reaching USD 2713.38 million by 2035. Growth is driven by record peak-season parcel volumes at NZ Post, automated hubs in Auckland and Christchurch, and a growing flow of low-value cross-border shipments that now carry border levies.

The New Zealand courier, express, and parcel (CEP) market is moving from capacity building to efficiency. Letters keep falling, yet parcels keep rising, so carriers are closing mail services, adding automated sorting and chasing e-commerce and cross-border volume while managing a fuel shock in 2026.
Three forces are shaping the market: e-commerce peaks, with NZ Post processing a record 575,000 parcels in a single day after Black Friday 2025; automation, with new hubs in Auckland and Christchurch; and border and fuel costs, as consignment-based levies started on 1 April 2026 and fuel pushed volumes softer from April.
In May 2025 NZ Post's Auckland Processing Centre became fully operational as the international gateway with Customs and the Ministry for Primary Industries. In May 2026 DHL Express opened a NZ$42 million Christchurch facility, and in August 2026 Freightways reported higher profit.
The market is moving from letter-led postal networks towards automated, parcel-first operations built for online retail peaks. Standard parcels lead in value because most online orders travel at standard speeds, while express services advance fastest on the back of time-definite business and cross-border needs. Domestic delivery remains the largest destination group, though inbound international parcels grow quickest as overseas platforms and small sellers ship directly to households. E-commerce and retail customers dominate demand, and healthcare and business services add steadier volumes. Auckland remains the largest region, and Canterbury grows quickest as South Island gateways and sorting capacity expand. Border levies, fuel recovery mechanisms and automation point to a lasting change in how carriers price and move parcels rather than a temporary uplift.

Parcel Growth Outpaces a Shrinking Mail Business
Revenue is on course to expand by about 64% across the decade, from USD 1,650.00 million in 2025 to USD 2,713.38 million in 2035 at a 5.1% CAGR. NZ Post delivered 85 million parcels but only 134 million letters in the year to 30 June 2026, and it keeps cutting mail services.
Express, Inbound and E-Commerce Lead Growth
Standard Parcels hold the largest share, but Express grows at an estimated 5.8% CAGR and International Inbound at an estimated 6.8% CAGR through 2035. DHL Express invested NZ$42 million in Christchurch in 2026, and Post Haste benefited from cross-border e-commerce growth, according to Freightways in August 2026.
Fuel and Border Costs Reshape Pricing
Carriers entered 2026 with border levies and rising diesel costs, and each moved to protect margins. Freightways shortened its fuel recovery lag, while DHL Express lifted prices from the start of the year.

Competition combines the state-owned NZ Post, the listed Freightways group, global integrators and franchise-based couriers. Entry barriers include automated sorting capacity, line-haul and airfreight access, border clearance expertise, rural coverage and relationships with online retailers and platforms.
New Zealand Post
New Zealand Post, the state-owned postal and parcel operator based in Wellington, runs the CourierPost parcel network, retail hubs and the Fliway and Supply Chain Solutions logistics business. In August 2026 it reported net profit of NZ$17 million, delivered 85 million parcels and completed its automated parcel processing investment. Its Auckland Processing Centre became fully operational as the international gateway in May 2025, and it is cutting mail services at 142 urban stores.
Freightways Group
Freightways Group, headquartered in Auckland, owns NZ Couriers, Post Haste, Castle Parcels, DX Mail and temperature-controlled services within its express package business. In August 2026 it reported revenue of NZ$1,463.6 million and net profit of NZ$94 million. It is spending NZ$8.2 million on Christchurch automated sortation and building a Palmerston North hub, while Post Haste benefited from cross-border e-commerce growth.
DHL Express
DHL Express, part of Deutsche Post DHL Group, operates its New Zealand and Pacific Islands business from Auckland under Managing Director Mark Foy. In May 2026 it opened a NZ$42 million, 8,500 square metre Christchurch Airport facility with automated sorting, and in September 2025 it announced annual price adjustments effective 1 January 2026. The Christchurch site is its first carbon-neutral building in New Zealand for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Aramex New Zealand
Aramex New Zealand, the local arm of Dubai-based Aramex, runs a franchise courier network serving businesses and online sellers across the country through regional franchisees. Its 2026 activity remains community focused, with the company confirming naming rights of the Aramex Kiwi Walk and Run Trail Series in April 2026 and a customer-funded Aramex Day for Camp Quality in January 2026. Its franchise model keeps it close to small business customers.
Other players operating in the New Zealand courier, express, and parcel (CEP) market include Mainfreight, FedEx Express, UPS, Toll Group, and Kuehne+Nagel, alongside regional courier franchisees, rural carriers, same-day delivery firms and e-commerce fulfillment partners supplying parcel delivery to retailers, exporters and households across New Zealand.
Competition rests on automated network capacity, airfreight access, border clearance and retailer relationships rather than price alone, while consolidation and hub investment could reshape positions.
