The Australia pharmaceuticals market covers prescription medicines, biologics, biosimilars, generics, plasma-derived therapies and vaccines supplied through community pharmacies, hospitals and online channels, measured at dispensed and supplied value. Most volume is subsidised through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, which sets prices through negotiated listings, while the Therapeutic Goods Administration decides which products may be supplied.
In 2025, the market is valued at AUD 27.00 billion in 2025 and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 5.00%, reaching AUD 43.98 billion by 2035. Growth is driven by 225.97 million subsidised prescriptions in the year to June 2025, a cut in the general patient co-payment to AUD 25 from 1 January 2026 and the steady listing of biologics and biosimilars.

2026-2035
The Australia pharmaceuticals market is being reshaped by price and access. One government payer sets most prices, a lower patient co-payment widens use, and global pricing pressure is making originator companies more selective about which products they bring to Australia.
Three forces are shaping the market: scale, with government PBS spending of AUD 19.1 billion in the year to June 2025; affordability, as the general co-payment fell to AUD 25 on 1 January 2026; and biologics, as biosimilar listings such as Sandoz's Afqlir from 1 February 2026 open competition in high-cost classes.
In November 2025 Health Minister Mark Butler warned that United States most-favoured-nation pricing could pressure governments to delist existing PBS medicines. In July 2026 Medicines Australia reported that only about a quarter of medicines launched globally in the past decade are PBS-listed.
The market is moving from small-molecule originators towards biologics, biosimilars and specialty therapies, while generics hold the volume base and plasma-derived products and vaccines follow global demand cycles. Oncology leads in value, and cardiovascular and metabolic care advances quickest as obesity and diabetes treatments seek reimbursement. Community pharmacies dominate supply, yet online and mail-order channels gain share as private-pay prescribing spreads. New South Wales remains the largest region, and Queensland grows fastest on population inflow and new sterile manufacturing capacity. Price negotiation, biosimilar competition and local manufacturing investment point to a durable change in product mix rather than a cyclical uplift.

A Government-Anchored Market Compounds Steadily
Revenue is on course to expand by about 63% across the decade, from AUD 27.00 billion in 2025 to AUD 43.98 billion in 2035 at a 5.0% CAGR. Government PBS spending of AUD 19.1 billion in the year to June 2025 gives suppliers a stable, predictable payer base.
Biologics and Metabolic Care Lead Growth
Originator small-molecule medicines hold the largest share, but Biologics and Biosimilars grow at an estimated 7.2% CAGR and Cardiovascular and Metabolic care at an estimated 6.6% CAGR through 2035. Wegovy's PBAC recommendation reported in January 2026 and Sandoz's February 2026 aflibercept listing show both forces at work.
Global Pricing Pressure Tests Access
Companies are weighing Australian prices against international reference points, and negotiations are becoming more public. Several supply decisions in 2026 show how a lower price can change which medicines are offered.

The Australia pharmaceuticals market is being reshaped by weight-loss drug pricing, slow access to new medicines, tougher listing negotiations and a lower patient co-payment.
August 2026 - Minister Butler Says Weight-Loss Drug Price Talks Have Stalled
July 2026 - Medicines Australia Reports Only a Quarter of New Medicines Are PBS-Listed
April 2026 - Eli Lilly Declines to List Mounjaro on the PBS for Type 2 Diabetes
January 2026 - General Patient Co-Payment Falls to AUD 25
Weight-loss drug price talks, tougher listing negotiations and a lower patient co-payment shape demand, while slow access to new medicines remains the main constraint on uptake.
Recent developments, presented from the most recent, show pharmacy-led growth, a planned withdrawal of a subsidised product, new generic partnerships and the delay of a vaccine business spin-off.
August 2026 - Sigma Healthcare Reports Revenue of AUD 10.8 Billion and 561 Chemist Warehouse Stores
July 2026 - AstraZeneca Plans to Remove Zoladex 3.6mg from the PBS, Then Agrees to Free Supply

Biosimilar listings, generic partnerships and a planned withdrawal of one subsidised product show suppliers adjusting portfolios to Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme pricing, while local manufacturing capacity expands.
The Expert Market Research’s report on the Australia Pharmaceuticals Market offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments.
Market Breakup by Product Type
Originator Small-Molecule Medicines lead on value, in our estimate, because patented oncology, cardiovascular and endocrine products carry the highest unit prices, with the March 2025 Budget adding AUD 1.8 billion of new and amended PBS listings. Generic Medicines hold the largest dispensing volume, and Arrotex's August 2025 Bayer oral contraceptive partnership shows suppliers extending beyond classic generics. Biologics and Biosimilars grow fastest at an estimated 7.2% CAGR through 2035, as Sandoz's Afqlir became the first PBS-listed aflibercept biosimilar on 1 February 2026. Plasma-Derived Products and Vaccines track global demand, with CSL's revenue down about 1% in August 2026.
Market Breakup by Therapeutic Area
Oncology leads in value, in our estimate, with AstraZeneca's Zoladex dispensed 92,191 times in the 12 months to May 2026 alone. Cardiovascular and Metabolic care grows fastest at an estimated 6.6% CAGR through 2035, as the PBAC recommended Wegovy for adults with heart disease and obesity in its November 2025 meeting and Eli Lilly declined to list Mounjaro in April 2026. Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases benefit from etanercept and ustekinumab biosimilars. Neurology and Mental Health includes two multiple sclerosis medicines under rapid review due by the end of 2026. Others include infectious disease, respiratory and rare conditions.
Market Breakup by Sales Channel
Community Pharmacies lead, in our estimate, as most of the 225.97 million subsidised prescriptions in the year to June 2025 were dispensed there, and Sigma's 561 Chemist Warehouse stores at August 2026 show the scale of the leading network. Hospital Pharmacies supply infused cancer and immunology therapies and plasma products, and the Arrotex and Pfizer Enbrel partnership of February 2026 spans hospital pharmacy. Online and Mail-Order Pharmacies grow fastest at an estimated 8.4% CAGR through 2035, as about 600,000 Australians buy weight-loss drugs privately, according to Minister Butler in August 2026. Others cover dispensing from clinics, aged care and direct-to-patient supply.
Market Breakup by Region
New South Wales dominates, in our estimate, as the most populous state, with Vitex's AUD 250 million Eastern Creek plant opening in July 2026 and a AUD 96 million RNA facility at Macquarie University due in 2026. It grows at an estimated 4.7% CAGR through 2035 from a mature base. Victoria, the base of CSL and Arrotex, grows at 4.9% and held 30% of clinical trial sites in August 2026. Queensland is the fastest-growing region at an estimated 5.6%, as Southern RNA gained state funding in May 2026 for sterile fill and finish capacity. Western Australia grows at 5.3%, and Others, covering the remaining states and territories, at 5.1%.
| CAGR 2026 to 2035, Market by Region | Growth Rate |
| New South Wales | 4.7 % |
| Victoria | 4.9 % |
| Queensland | 5.6 % |
| Western Australia | 5.3 % |
| Others (incl. South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory) | 5.1 % |
Competition combines global originators, local generic suppliers, a plasma and vaccine group and large pharmacy networks. Entry barriers include Therapeutic Goods Administration registration, PBS listing success, biosimilar timing, cold chain supply and pharmacy and hospital relationships.
CSL
CSL, headquartered in Melbourne, develops plasma-derived therapies through CSL Behring, influenza vaccines through Seqirus and iron and kidney products through Vifor. On 18 August 2026 it reported revenue of nearly USD 15.8 billion, down about 1%, and a net loss of almost USD 3 billion after USD 7.9 billion of impairment and restructuring costs. Gordon Naylor became interim chief executive in February 2026.
AstraZeneca
AstraZeneca, whose global headquarters is in Cambridge, United Kingdom, operates in Australia from Sydney and sells oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory and rare disease medicines. In July 2026 it said it would stop PBS supply of Zoladex 3.6mg in November, citing the PBS price, then confirmed free supply from 1 November 2026. The product was dispensed 92,191 times in the 12 months to May 2026.
Sandoz
Sandoz, the Swiss generics and biosimilars company headquartered in Basel, supplies Australian pharmacies and hospitals from its local operation. The Therapeutic Goods Administration approved its aflibercept biosimilars Afqlir and Enzeevu on 27 May 2025, and Afqlir became the first PBS-listed aflibercept biosimilar on 1 February 2026. Its Tyruko natalizumab biosimilar was also positioned for PBS listing from July 2025.
Arrotex Pharmaceuticals
Arrotex Pharmaceuticals, a Melbourne-based supplier, is described as Australia's largest generic pharmaceutical company by volume, selling prescription and consumer health products through community pharmacies. In August 2025 it partnered with Bayer Australia to market the Yaz and Yasmin oral contraceptives, and in February 2026 it began representing Pfizer's Enbrel across pharmacy, hospital and prescriber channels.
Other players operating in the Australia pharmaceuticals market include Pfizer Australia, Viatris, Sigma Healthcare, Eli Lilly Australia, and Sanofi, alongside regional distributors, specialty biotechnology sponsors, contract manufacturers and private-label suppliers supplying medicines to pharmacies, hospitals, clinics and online dispensers across Australia.
Competition rests on Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme listing success, patent portfolios, biosimilar timing and pharmacy reach rather than price alone, while restructuring at the largest local group reshapes priorities.
