The New Zealand solar energy market covers the equipment, engineering, installation and operating services behind photovoltaic generation, from grid-connected solar farms of more than 100 MW to rooftop arrays on homes, farms, factories and warehouses. Solar is a young but fast-moving part of a grid that is already about 92% renewable, and its summer-weighted output complements hydro lakes that run low in dry years.
In 2025, the market is valued at USD 760.00 million and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 6.50%, reaching USD 1426.62 million by 2035. Growth is driven by 369 MW of distributed solar added in the year to June 2026, a pipeline of solar farms backed by the major generator-retailers and a rooftop consent exemption that took effect in October 2025.

2026-2035
The New Zealand solar energy market is shifting from a niche rooftop activity to a core source of new generation. Developers are energising farms of 200 MW, retailers are tying solar to dairy electrification, and households and businesses are adding panels and batteries at record pace.
Three forces are shaping the market: utility-scale projects that are reaching financial close and commissioning at the same time; rooftop uptake that passed 1,000 MW in May 2026 after rules were relaxed; and the need for summer-weighted supply to cover dry-year hydro risk and growing electrified load.
In July 2026 Harmony Energy energised the Tauhei Solar Farm in Waikato, and in August 2026 Contact Energy confirmed that commissioning had started at Kōwhai Park. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment reported on 10 September 2026 that solar generation rose 56.2% in the second quarter.
The market is moving from small rooftop systems towards large solar farms, commercial arrays and battery-ready homes, with generator-retailers committing capital ahead of expected electricity demand from dairy processing, transport and industry. Utility-scale solar farms lead in value because a single project carries hundreds of millions of dollars of modules, grid works and construction. Commercial and industrial rooftop systems advance fastest as power purchase agreements remove upfront cost for businesses. Installation and engineering services dominate spending today, while operations and maintenance grows as the installed base ages. Waikato is the largest region, and Auckland grows quickest from a low household penetration. Fast-track consenting, relaxed rooftop rules and falling module prices point to durable expansion rather than a short cycle.

The Expert Market Research’s report on the New Zealand Solar Energy Market offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments.
Market Breakup by Installation Type
Utility-Scale Solar Farms lead on value, in our estimate, as Tauhei at 202 MWp was energised in July 2026 and Meridian Energy's Ruakākā farm is due to deliver first power late in 2026. Commercial and Industrial Rooftop grows fastest at an estimated 8.1% CAGR through 2035, with 7,949 commercial connections carrying 565 MW at June 2026. Residential Rooftop holds 80,463 connections and 456 MW, with an average system of 5.7 kW, and grows steadily. Others include agricultural, community and floating or carport systems, and Central Hawke's Bay's 31.5 MW farm, financed in July 2026, shows mid-sized projects joining the mix.
Market Breakup by Offering
Installation and EPC Services lead, in our estimate, because contractors such as Elecnor on Tauhei and CHINTEC on Kōwhai Park carry the largest share of project spend. Solar Modules follow, with the Central Hawke's Bay farm using about 49,000 modules of 640 W. Inverters and Balance of System grow with battery coupling, since about 22% of connections already report a battery. Operations and Maintenance Services grow fastest at an estimated 7.4% CAGR through 2035, as Tauhei, Kōwhai Park and other farms move from construction into long-term operation during 2026.
Market Breakup by Ownership Model
Utility and Developer Owned assets lead, in our estimate, with Harmony Energy, Igneo, Lightsource bp and Contact Energy holding the largest farms. Customer Owned systems cover most of the 80,463 residential connections reported at June 2026. Third-Party Owned (PPA and Lease) grows fastest at an estimated 8.6% CAGR through 2035, because Sunergise finances commercial arrays, including a 5.3 MW system at Fisher and Paykel Healthcare, under pay-for-generation contracts. Others include community schemes and network-owned projects such as the Centralines joint venture financed in July 2026.
Market Breakup by Region
Waikato dominates, in our estimate, with the 202 MWp Tauhei farm, the 110 MW Morrinsville consent of July 2026 and the 271 MWp Rangiriri site, and it grows at 6.9%. Auckland is the fastest-growing region at an estimated 7.7% CAGR, as it holds the most residential connections, 14,877, yet only 2.4% household uptake. Canterbury grows at 6.2%, with 13,934 solar homes and the Kōwhai Park farm commissioning from August 2026. Wellington grows at 6.0%, led by commercial rooftops. Rest of New Zealand grows at 6.6%, including Northland's Ruakākā farm and Tasman's 9.1% household uptake.
| CAGR 2026 to 2035, Market by Region | Growth Rate |
| Auckland | 7.7 % |
| Wellington | 6.0 % |
| Canterbury | 6.2 % |
| Waikato | 6.9 % |
| Rest of New Zealand | 6.6 % |
Competition combines the listed generator-retailers, specialist independent developers and commercial installers. Entry barriers include grid connection access, land and consent approvals, project finance, contractor capacity and long-term offtake with a retailer.
Meridian Energy
Meridian Energy, headquartered in Wellington, is a state-majority-owned generator-retailer best known for hydro, wind and now solar. It is building the Ruakākā solar farm in Northland, which was approved at a cost of NZ$227 million, with first power expected in late 2026. In July 2026 it won consent for a 110 MW farm at Morrinsville and contracted all output from Tauhei for ten years, after consenting a 120 MW Bunnythorpe farm in May 2026.
Contact Energy
Contact Energy, headquartered in Wellington, is a generator-retailer that builds solar through its joint venture with Lightsource bp. At its result on 10 August 2026 it reported that commissioning had started at the 168 MWdc Kōwhai Park farm beside Christchurch Airport and that Glorit had reached financial close in June 2026. It links summer solar output to roughly half a terawatt hour a year of dairy electrification load.
Genesis Energy
Genesis Energy, headquartered in Auckland, is a generator-retailer with a growing solar pipeline. It announced the 271 MWp Rangiriri acquisition on 29 October 2025 and reached financial close on the Edgecumbe farm in Bay of Plenty in November 2025. At its result on 27 August 2026 it confirmed investment decisions on Tihori, at 136 MWp, and on the 70 MWp Leeston farm in Canterbury.
Lodestone Energy
Lodestone Energy, an Auckland-based solar developer, builds and owns farms across the North and South Islands. In July 2026 it reached financial close on a 31.5 MW, NZ$50 million farm in Central Hawke's Bay with Centralines, its sixth New Zealand solar project, with operations due in late 2027. It also holds provisional fast-track approval for the 220 MW Haldon farm in the South Island.
Other players operating in the New Zealand solar energy market include Harmony Energy New Zealand, Lightsource bp, Aquila Clean Energy APAC, Sunergise, and Elecnor New Zealand, alongside independent installers, network operators, engineering contractors and equipment distributors serving homes, farms, businesses and project developers across New Zealand.
Competition rests on grid connection access, project finance, retailer offtake and contractor capacity rather than panel price alone, while new entrants and joint ventures keep reshaping the developer landscape.
