The New Zealand insulin drugs and devices market covers rapid-acting, long-acting, premixed and human insulins, together with the pens, pen needles, syringes, insulin pumps, infusion sets and patch systems used to deliver them to people with type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. Most volume is funded through Pharmac, the national medicines funder, so brand choice follows national funding and supply decisions rather than retail competition.
In 2025, the market is valued at USD 88.00 million and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 4.60%, reaching USD 137.97 million by 2035. Growth is driven by a diabetes population of about 268,248 people, the 2025 funding of Ryzodeg and the move of funded pump users to automated insulin delivery.

2026-2035
The New Zealand insulin drugs and devices market is being reshaped by a single national funder. Pharmac chooses which insulins, pumps and consumables are subsidised, so supplier decisions and funding notices in 2025 and 2026 now move demand faster than clinical fashion does.
Three forces are shaping the market: a growing diabetes population, with a study reported on 24 January 2025 projecting 502,358 people by 2044; a shift from vials and human insulin towards analogue pens and pumps; and supply withdrawals, as Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk retire older presentations.
On 11 April 2025 Pharmac decided to fund Ryzodeg from 1 May 2025. On 1 October 2026 funding for Medtronic MiniMed 770G consumables ended, leaving Tandem and YpsoPump as the two funded pump systems.
The market is moving from human insulin and vials towards analogue pens, premixed co-formulations and automated delivery systems that link pumps with glucose sensors. Long-acting insulin leads in value because it underpins most treatment plans, while pens and pen needles remain the largest device group. Premixed insulin and insulin pumps advance fastest as funded access widens, and Type 1 Diabetes grows quickest as pump eligibility reaches more patients. Auckland remains the largest region on population and diabetes burden, and Waikato grows quickest as services expand outside the main centres. National tenders, supply withdrawals and pump consolidation point to a durable shift in product mix rather than a short cycle, even as price pressure on mature insulin brands persists.

A Growing Patient Pool Underpins Demand
Revenue is on course to rise by about 57% across the decade, from USD 88.00 million in 2025 to USD 137.97 million in 2035 at a 4.6% CAGR. About 268,248 people live with diabetes, and the projection of 502,358 by 2044 keeps insulin and device demand rising even under a fixed national budget.
Premix and Pump Systems Lead Growth
Long-Acting Insulin holds the largest share, but Premixed Insulin grows at an estimated 5.8% CAGR and Insulin Pumps and Consumables at an estimated 8.4% CAGR through 2035. Tandem and YpsoPump are now the only funded pump systems, and Pharmac funded MyLife YpsoPump Orbit Soft infusion sets from 1 August 2026.
Supply Withdrawals Force Brand Switching
Suppliers, not Pharmac, decided to retire several presentations, and prescribers must move patients to funded alternatives. The changes shift volume towards pens, analogues and premix co-formulations.

The Expert Market Research’s report on the New Zealand Insulin Drugs and Devices Market offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments.
Market Breakup by Drug Type
Long-Acting Insulin leads on value, in our estimate, because basal analogues such as Tresiba underpin most treatment plans. Premixed Insulin grows fastest at an estimated 5.8% CAGR through 2035, after Pharmac decided on 11 April 2025 to fund Ryzodeg from 1 May 2025 for about 8,000 users in its first year. Rapid-Acting Insulin grows steadily, though Eli Lilly is retiring its Humalog 10 ml vial, with supply ending in July 2026. Human Insulin, covering Humulin and Actrapid, declines in share as Humulin R, NPH and 30/70 vials leave the market in 2026 and Actrapid and Protaphane penfills end by the close of 2026.
Market Breakup by Device Type
Insulin Pens and Pen Needles lead, in our estimate, because most analogue insulin is dispensed in pens, which Pharmac says are generally available at no cost from diabetes clinics. Insulin Pumps and Consumables grow fastest at an estimated 8.4% CAGR through 2035, as Tandem and YpsoPump become the only funded systems after 1 October 2026. Syringes and Vial Devices lose ground as 10 ml vials are withdrawn during 2026. Patches and Others, including emerging patch pumps such as the MiniMed Fit slated for United States filing in 2026, start from a small base.
Market Breakup by Diabetes Type
Type 2 Diabetes leads on value, in our estimate, because it accounts for most of the 268,248 people with diabetes reported on 24 January 2025, and Ryzodeg was aimed mainly at them. Type 1 Diabetes grows fastest at an estimated 5.4% CAGR through 2035, since funded pumps and sensors are targeted at people with type 1 and some other forms of diabetes. Gestational Diabetes grows at 4.3% on higher maternal age and screening. Others include monogenic and pancreatic diabetes and grow at 3.9%, with demand sensitive to the supply withdrawals announced in 2026.
Market Breakup by Region
Auckland dominates, in our estimate, as the largest population centre, with Pacific and Asian communities that the study reported on 24 January 2025 expects to see the sharpest rises in diabetes. It grows at an estimated 4.4% CAGR through 2035 from a large base. Waikato is the fastest-growing region at an estimated 5.1%, as services outside the main centres expand. Canterbury grows at 4.6%, Wellington at 4.5% and Others, covering Bay of Plenty, Otago and Northland, at 4.7%. Because Pharmac funds nationally, pump switching from 1 October 2026 affects every region.
| CAGR 2026 to 2035, Market by Region | Growth Rate |
| Auckland | 4.4 % |
| Wellington | 4.5 % |
| Canterbury | 4.6 % |
| Waikato | 5.1 % |
| Others (incl. Bay of Plenty, Otago and Northland) | 4.7 % |
Competition combines global insulin makers, pump and sensor suppliers and local distributors. Because Pharmac contracts nationally, entry barriers include tender success, funded listing, Medsafe approval, supply reliability and relationships with diabetes clinics and prescribers.
Novo Nordisk
Novo Nordisk, headquartered in Bagsvaerd, Denmark, supplies NovoRapid, Tresiba, Ryzodeg, Actrapid and Protaphane in New Zealand through Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Pharmac funded Ryzodeg 70/30 Penfill from 1 May 2025 at a listed price of NZ$80 for five cartridges. In its report of 4 August 2026 the group recorded lower insulin sales, and three of its 3 ml penfills and pens leave New Zealand by the end of 2026.
Eli Lilly
Eli Lilly, headquartered in Indianapolis, United States, supplies Humalog and Humulin insulins in New Zealand in vials and 3 ml penfills. Education bodies relayed that the company would stop selling Humulin R vials in early 2026 and Humalog, Humulin NPH and Humulin 30/70 vials by mid-2026, with Pharmac ending funding between November 2026 and February 2027. The 3 ml penfills remain available, so the brands stay present.
Tandem Diabetes Care
Tandem Diabetes Care, headquartered in San Diego, United States, makes the t:slim X2 and Mobi insulin pumps, supplied in New Zealand through NZMS and funded by Pharmac with Autosoft infusion sets. In its results dated 6 August 2026 it reported sales of USD 254.6 million and about 11,000 international pump shipments in the quarter. It also began the international rollout of Tandem Mobi.
Medtronic
Medtronic, headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, sells the MiniMed 770G pump in New Zealand through InterMed, and its pump business now sits in MiniMed Group, which listed on the Nasdaq in March 2026. Pharmac ended funding for MiniMed 770G consumables on 1 October 2026, so users are moving to Tandem or YpsoPump. Medtronic keeps about 90% of MiniMed and remains an active supplier to existing patients.
Other players operating in the New Zealand insulin drugs and devices market include Sanofi, mylife Diabetes Care, Dexcom, Abbott, and Pharmaco, alongside needle and syringe suppliers, hospital procurement partners, community pharmacies and independent diabetes device distributors serving clinics and patients across New Zealand.
Competition rests on national funding listings, supply reliability, pen and pump compatibility with glucose sensors, and clinic relationships rather than price alone, while withdrawals could reshape positions.
