The New Zealand freight and logistics market covers the paid movement, storage and handling of goods by road, rail, sea and air, together with warehousing, freight forwarding, customs brokerage and express parcel services. New Zealand is a remote island economy whose dairy, meat, log and horticulture exports and vehicle and consumer imports move through a handful of ports, so shipping, rail and trucking are tightly interdependent.
In 2025, the market is valued at USD 13.80 billion and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 4.10%, reaching USD 20.62 billion by 2035. Growth is driven by 932,209 containers handled at Ports of Auckland in the year to June 2026, rising rail shuttles from ports to inland hubs and heavy investment in warehouses, ferries and parcel networks.

2026-2035
The New Zealand freight and logistics market is being rebuilt around ports, rail and automated hubs rather than simply adding trucks. Fuel shocks in 2026 pushed up costs, yet cargo volumes held up, and operators kept committing capital to warehouses, ferries and sorting centres.
Three forces are shaping the market: port growth, with Port of Tauranga handling 1,213,494 containers in the year to June 2026; modal shift, as road still carries about 93% of domestic freight while rail shuttles expand; and fuel exposure, since diesel is usually the second-largest cost for road operators.
On 17 July 2026 Minister for Rail Winston Peters named the new Cook Strait ferries Kupe and Cook, a NZD 1.9 billion project. In September 2026 Lyttelton Port Company sought wharf builders for its NZD 821 million expansion, and in May 2026 DHL Express opened a NZD 42 million Christchurch Airport gateway.
The market is moving from truck-led, single-mode movements towards integrated chains that combine port rail shuttles, automated hubs and large multi-user warehouses. Road freight leads in value because it carries most domestic cargo, while rail advances fastest as ports push containers off congested roads. Warehousing and storage outpaces other services as retailers, exporters and parcel carriers demand more pallet capacity, and retail and e-commerce users expand quickest among industries. Auckland remains the largest region, with Waikato growing fastest as inland hubs link Auckland and Tauranga. Ferry replacement, port expansion and fuel-linked pricing point to structural reinvestment rather than a short cyclical uplift.

Ports and Rail Anchor Long-Term Demand
Revenue is on course to expand by about 49% across the decade, from USD 13.80 billion in 2025 to USD 20.62 billion in 2035 at a 4.1% CAGR. Ports of Auckland handled 932,209 containers and Port of Tauranga 1,213,494 in the year to June 2026, sustaining demand for trucking, rail and storage.
Rail and Warehousing Lead Growth
Road Freight holds the largest share, but Rail Freight grows at an estimated 5.4% CAGR and Warehousing and Storage at an estimated 5.0% CAGR through 2035. KiwiRail moved about 3.5 billion net tonne kilometres in the year to June 2026, and Mainfreight committed to a 55,000-pallet Auckland site.
Fuel Shock Tests Operators
Diesel is usually the second-largest cost for road freight operators, so the 2026 oil spike flowed quickly into rates, and carriers leaned on fuel adjustment factors to protect thin margins.
