The New Zealand data center market covers the facilities, power, cooling, connectivity and services that house servers and storage for businesses, government agencies, telecommunications carriers and cloud providers. Revenue comes from wholesale and retail colocation, managed hosting, interconnection and related facility services, and excludes the cloud service fees that hyperscalers charge their own customers.
In 2025, the market is valued at USD 430.00 million and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 14.00%, reaching USD 1594.11 million by 2035. Growth is driven by the arrival of local hyperscale cloud regions, demand for sovereign and artificial intelligence capacity, and a large pipeline of renewable-backed campuses in Auckland, Taranaki and Southland.

2026-2035
The New Zealand data center market is moving from a small enterprise hosting sector to a capacity-led infrastructure class. Local cloud regions, sovereign data rules and artificial intelligence workloads are pulling investors towards Auckland and, increasingly, regions with spare renewable power.
Three forces shape the market: public cloud regions that keep data onshore, government and enterprise preference for locally controlled facilities, and electricity access, because several proposed campuses are sized against national power demand and must show new generation to proceed.
In September 2025 Amazon Web Services opened its Auckland region, and in January 2026 Spark completed the sale of 75% of its data center business to Pacific Equity Partners. In July 2026 the Prime Minister said hyperscale operators must add new generation.
The market is shifting from small enterprise server rooms towards purpose-built colocation and hyperscale campuses designed for dense artificial intelligence loads. Retail colocation still serves most local enterprises, while wholesale capacity advances fastest as cloud providers and large tenants contract in bulk. Cloud and hyperscale providers become the most dynamic customer group, and facilities above 100 MW emerge from a small base as proposals move through consenting. Auckland remains the dominant region because of cable landings and customer density, while regions with generation capacity grow quickest. Government compacts on additional electricity supply, sovereign hosting requirements and liquid cooling retrofits point to a durable structural build-out rather than a short cycle.

Cloud Regions and Sovereign Demand Lift Revenue
Revenue is on course to more than triple, from USD 430.00 million in 2025 to USD 1,594.11 million in 2035 at a 14.0% CAGR. The Auckland regions of Amazon Web Services and Microsoft keep data onshore and pull enterprise, public sector and tenant demand into local facilities.
Wholesale Capacity and Large Campuses Lead Growth
Retail colocation holds the largest share, but Wholesale Colocation grows at an estimated 17.0% CAGR and facilities above 100 MW at an estimated 19.5% CAGR through 2035. TenPeaks, Datagrid and Contact Energy with CDC Data Centres each reported multi-site pipelines in 2026.
Power Access Becomes the Gating Factor
Government policy in 2026 ties large data centers to new electricity supply, so developers with generation partners hold the strongest position. Regions with spare renewable output grow fastest, while Auckland stays the largest base.

The Expert Market Research’s report on the New Zealand Data Center Market offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments.
Market Breakup by Service Type
Retail Colocation leads on value, in our estimate, because most local enterprises still rent racks and cages rather than whole halls, as seen in Datacom's April 2026 purchase of a site with about 500 rack spaces. Wholesale Colocation grows fastest at an estimated 17.0% CAGR through 2035, as TenPeaks reported a pipeline above 130 MW in February 2026. Managed Hosting benefits from government-certified facilities and sovereign demand. Interconnection and Others cover cross-connects, meet-me rooms and remote hands, which gain from the September 2025 opening of the Amazon Web Services Auckland region.
Market Breakup by End User
Telecommunications and IT Services lead in value, in our estimate, led by Spark, which named itself an initial colocation customer of TenPeaks in March 2026. Cloud and Hyperscale Providers grow fastest at an estimated 16.0% CAGR through 2035, supported by Amazon Web Services' NZ$7.5 billion commitment and Microsoft's regional customer growth reported in December 2025. Government and Public Sector demand rests on certified onshore hosting, as Christchurch City Council's cloud migration shows. Enterprises and Others include banks, retailers and agri-tech firms, such as Techion, shifting workloads onshore.
Market Breakup by Facility Capacity
Below 5 MW facilities lead in value today, in our estimate, because TenPeaks' 11 operating sites hold only 23 MW in total, as reported in March 2026. The 5 MW to 20 MW band serves city-edge hubs and the Datacom network of five sites. The 20 MW to 100 MW band grows with Auckland campuses planned by TenPeaks. Above 100 MW grows fastest at an estimated 19.5% CAGR through 2035, from a small base, as Datagrid's 280 MW consent of March 2026 and the 250 MW Taranaki study of August 2026 move forward.
Market Breakup by Region
Auckland dominates, in our estimate, with the Amazon Web Services region opened in September 2025 and Datacom's April 2026 purchase, growing at 14.6% from the largest base. Wellington grows at 12.8% on government and agency hosting. Canterbury grows at 13.2%, as Christchurch City Council completed its cloud migration in 2025. Waikato grows at 15.1%, helped by Hamilton facilities in the TenPeaks portfolio. Rest of New Zealand is the fastest-growing region at an estimated 16.4%, on Datagrid's Southland consent of March 2026 and the Taranaki proposal of August 2026.
| CAGR 2026 to 2035, Market by Region | Growth Rate |
| Auckland | 14.6 % |
| Wellington | 12.8 % |
| Canterbury | 13.2 % |
| Waikato | 15.1 % |
| Rest of New Zealand (incl. Southland and Taranaki) | 16.4 % |
Competition combines specialist colocation operators, a locally owned technology services group, global cloud providers and new power-backed developers. Entry barriers include grid access, resource consents, cable connectivity, government certification, capital and the ability to secure anchor tenants.
CDC Data Centres
CDC Data Centres, headquartered in Canberra, Australia, builds hyperscale and government data center campuses in Australia and New Zealand, including the Silverdale and Hobsonville campuses in Auckland. It reported about 100 MW of new contracted capacity for cloud and artificial intelligence workloads in September 2025. In August 2026 it began exploring a 250 MW data center with Contact Energy at Stratford, Taranaki, which is not yet committed.
TenPeaks Data Centres
TenPeaks Data Centres is the New Zealand operator created when Spark sold 75% of its data center business to Pacific Equity Partners, completed in January 2026 at an enterprise value of up to NZ$705 million. It runs 11 facilities with 23 MW and plans over 130 MW on owned land. In February 2026 it said its pipeline represents more than NZ$3 billion of investment, including the new Takanini data center.
Microsoft
Microsoft, headquartered in Redmond, Washington, runs the New Zealand North cloud region, its first in the country, powered by renewable electricity from Contact Energy. In December 2025 it reported customers including the Accident Compensation Corporation, Spark, Techion and Christchurch City Council, and said it aims to upskill 100,000 New Zealanders for the digital economy by 2027.
Amazon Web Services
Amazon Web Services, headquartered in Seattle, Washington, launched its Asia Pacific (New Zealand) region in Auckland with three availability zones on 1 September 2025. The company is investing NZ$7.5 billion in the region, which it expects to add NZ$10.8 billion to gross domestic product and support about 1,000 jobs each year.
Other players operating in the New Zealand data center market include Datacom, Datagrid New Zealand, Spark New Zealand, Vocus, and Contact Energy, alongside regional hosting providers, carrier-neutral interconnection operators, power developers and managed service firms supplying capacity to enterprises, agencies and cloud providers across New Zealand.
Competition rests on grid access, consenting, cable connectivity, government certification and anchor tenants rather than price alone, while power partnerships increasingly decide which developers can scale.
