The New Zealand continuous glucose monitoring devices market covers wearable sensors, transmitters, receivers and companion software that measure glucose in interstitial fluid every few minutes and send readings to a phone, reader or insulin pump. Devices replace routine finger pricks, show trends and trigger alarms for low or high glucose, and increasingly feed automated insulin delivery.
In 2025, the market is valued at USD 40.00 million and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 9.00%, reaching USD 94.69 million by 2035. Growth is driven by public funding of standalone sensors, about 268,248 people living with diabetes in a model baseline reported in January 2025, and the move of insulin pump users to interoperable sensors.

2026-2035
The New Zealand continuous glucose monitoring devices market is shifting from a self-funded niche to a publicly supported mainstream therapy. Pharmac now funds standalone and pump-linked sensors for people with type 1 diabetes and related conditions, and applications to widen access to type 2 diabetes are under consideration.
Three forces are shaping the market: tighter Pharmac contracting, which consolidates supply around a few brands; the rise of automated insulin delivery, which ties sensors to Tandem and mylife YpsoPump pumps; and a growing diabetes population, projected by researchers to reach 502,358 people by 2044.
In April 2025 Pharmac announced it would list FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus from 1 May 2025 at NZ$99.46 per sensor. In December 2025 it removed Special Authority renewals, and in August 2026 it said Dexcom G6 would be retired by early 2027.
The market is moving from episodic self-purchase towards funded, continuous use, with sensors tied ever more closely to automated insulin pumps and phone apps. Sensors lead in value because every user buys them repeatedly, while transmitters, readers and software follow the sensor choice. Software and apps advance fastest as pump algorithms, clinic dashboards and remote sharing create recurring value. Type 1 diabetes remains the largest group, and Type 2 Diabetes grows fastest if funding applications succeed. Community pharmacies dispense most supply, while online and direct-to-patient channels gain share. Auckland remains the largest region, and Canterbury grows quickest on population gains. Regulatory notices, supplier changes and funding rules will shape brand positions more than price alone, even as private purchasers keep a modest but valuable segment.

Public Funding Anchors Long-Term Demand
Revenue is on course to expand by about 137% across the decade, from USD 40.00 million in 2025 to USD 94.69 million in 2035 at a 9.0% CAGR. Funded access, an ageing and growing diabetes population and the steady move to automated insulin delivery keep recurring sensor purchases rising.
Apps and Type 2 Access Lead Growth
Sensors hold the largest share, but Software and Apps grow at an estimated 11.4% CAGR and Type 2 Diabetes at an estimated 12.6% CAGR through 2035. Pharmac said in October 2026 that three applications to extend funding to type 2 diabetes are being considered, which would widen the user base sharply.
Supplier Changes Reset Brand Positions
Pharmac is steering users towards fewer, interoperable devices, so sensor and pump brands must align with funded systems. Switching rules and device allowances also shape which brands gain volume.

The Expert Market Research’s report on the New Zealand Continuous Glucose Monitoring Devices Market offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments.
Market Breakup by Component
Sensors lead on value, in our estimate, because each user buys them every 10 to 15 days, as Pharmac's 28-sensor annual limit for Libre 2 Plus from 1 May 2025 shows. Transmitters grow steadily with reusable and pump-linked systems, while Dexcom G7 integrates the transmitter into the sensor. Receivers and Display Devices include dedicated readers, which Pharmac said in August 2025 remain unchanged for Libre 2 Plus alongside its phone app. Software and Apps grow fastest at an estimated 11.4% CAGR through 2035, as the Libre app update advised for 27 October 2026 and pump algorithms such as Control-IQ and CamAPS FX show.
Market Breakup by Diabetes Type
Type 1 Diabetes leads on value, in our estimate, because Pharmac's Special Authority for standalone sensors, updated for Libre 2 Plus in April 2025, centres on this group. Type 2 Diabetes grows fastest at an estimated 12.6% CAGR through 2035, since three funding applications were being considered in October 2026 and self-funded use is rising. Others include type 3c, monogenic and neonatal diabetes, which Pharmac also covers where an endocrinologist expects benefit. Researchers reported in January 2025 that 268,248 people had diabetes at baseline.
Market Breakup by Distribution Channel
Community Pharmacies lead, in our estimate, because funded prescriptions are collected there, and Pharmac told pharmacists in August 2026 to prompt Dexcom G6 users to see a prescriber. Hospital and Clinic Pharmacies serve pump starts and paediatric teams, including the pump-linked Libre 3 Plus, which Mediray says is supplied only to funded automated insulin delivery users. Online and Direct-to-Patient grows fastest at an estimated 10.3% CAGR through 2035, as Dexcom runs a Pharmac funding support service from Ellerslie, Auckland. Others cover specialist clinics and community programmes.
Market Breakup by Region
Auckland dominates, in our estimate, with the largest population, the main distributor base at Ellerslie and the busiest specialist diabetes services, and grows at an estimated 8.7% CAGR through 2035 from a large base. Stats NZ reported in October 2025 that Auckland grew 1.0% in the year to June 2025. Canterbury is fastest at an estimated 9.8%, after it rose 1.1% to 698,200 people. Waikato grows at 9.5% on 1.0% growth. Wellington grows at 8.2% after flat population growth, and Others at 9.1%.
| CAGR 2026 to 2035, Market by Region | Growth Rate |
| Auckland | 8.7 % |
| Wellington | 8.2 % |
| Canterbury | 9.8 % |
| Waikato | 9.5 % |
| Others (incl. Otago, Bay of Plenty and Northland) | 9.1 % |
Competition combines global sensor makers, pump partners and local distributors under Pharmac contracts. Entry barriers include Medsafe approval, Pharmac listing, interoperability with funded pumps, app compatibility and relationships with specialist diabetes teams and pharmacies.
Dexcom
Dexcom, based in San Diego, makes the G7 and ONE+ sensors, supplied in New Zealand by New Zealand Medical and Scientific from Ellerslie, Auckland. Both are Pharmac-funded, with up to 40 sensors a year. In June 2026 Medsafe published a Dexcom alert on two G7 lots, noting none were distributed locally. Dexcom reported in April 2026 that international revenue rose 26% in the first quarter, and Pharmac set G6 retirement for early 2027.
Abbott
Abbott, based in Abbott Park, Illinois, sells FreeStyle Libre sensors in New Zealand through Abbott Laboratories NZ and distributor Mediray. Pharmac listed Libre 2 Plus from 1 May 2025 at NZ$99.46 per sensor, and Libre 3 Plus is funded for automated insulin delivery users. In July 2026 Abbott reported continuous glucose monitor sales up 11.0%, and in May 2026 it announced a CE Mark for the Libre Duo glucose and ketone sensor.
Tandem Diabetes Care
Tandem Diabetes Care, based in San Diego, supplies the t:slim X2 pump with Basal-IQ and Control-IQ in New Zealand, a Pharmac-funded system distributed by New Zealand Medical and Scientific. Pharmac said in August 2026 that Dexcom G7 works with both funded pumps, and that Medtronic 770G users moving to Tandem or YpsoPump need a new Special Authority. The pump ties users to interoperable Dexcom and Libre sensors.
Ypsomed
Ypsomed, based in Burgdorf, Switzerland, makes the mylife YpsoPump, funded by Pharmac with the CamAPS FX algorithm and supplied locally by Pharmaco. Pharmac funded mylife YpsoPump Orbit Soft infusion sets from 1 August 2026 in four sizes. The pump works with Dexcom G7 and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus, so it drives sensor demand, and Pharmac named it as an alternative for Medtronic MiniMed 770G users in October 2026.
Other players operating in the New Zealand continuous glucose monitoring devices market include Medtronic, Mediray, Pharmaco, Roche Diabetes Care, and Senseonics, alongside independent pharmacies, diabetes clinics, importers and online retailers supplying sensors, accessories and support to patients across New Zealand.
Competition rests on Pharmac listing, pump interoperability, app quality and clinic relationships rather than price alone, while supplier retirements and contract changes can quickly reshape brand positions.
