The New Zealand container glass market covers glass bottles and jars made or imported for wine, beer, cider, spirits, ready-to-drink beverages, sauces, preserves and other foods. Glass is valued for its inertness, barrier strength and recyclability, which is why New Zealand's wine, brewing and premium food exporters still favour it over lighter formats.
In 2025, the market is valued at USD 340.00 million and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 2.60%, reaching USD 439.49 million by 2035. Growth is supported by wine exports of NZ$2.108 billion in the 12 months to June 2026, a local furnace operator making more than 700 million bottles and jars a year, and rising recycled content.

2026-2035
The New Zealand container glass market is mature but not static. Wine volumes are being managed down after two large vintages, bulk shipments are taking share from bottled wine, and deposit and kerbside policy remains unsettled, yet premium, recycled-content and returnable formats keep glass relevant.
Three forces shape the outlook: wine, which anchors demand because 90% of New Zealand wine is exported; recycled content, with locally made bottles and jars averaging 70% cullet; and policy, as councils spend about NZ$55 million a year on kerbside glass while the sector argues over a container return scheme.
In April 2025 Visy marked its first 70% recycled content result at its Auckland glass site, and in May 2026 it repeated the result. In July 2026 Lion began a returnable Steinlager bottle pilot in 48 Super Liquor stores.
Demand is shifting gradually from standard wine bottles towards premium, lighter and returnable formats, while recycled content becomes a purchasing criterion for brand owners. Beverage bottles lead in value, and food jars and specialty containers advance fastest as exporters of sauces, honey and premium foods trade up. Wine remains the largest application, but spirits and ready-to-drink products grow quickest from a smaller base. Green glass leads by colour, with flint gaining on premium whites and spirits. Auckland holds the largest share because the only local furnace and many bottlers sit there, and Canterbury grows fastest as vineyard, food and population growth lift filling activity. Policy on container return and extended producer responsibility will decide how much glass is reused rather than downcycled.

Local Furnace Capacity Anchors Supply
Revenue is on course to expand by about 29% across the decade, from USD 340.00 million in 2025 to USD 439.49 million in 2035 at a 2.6% CAGR. Visy's Auckland site, fed by glass from 50 councils, supplies most domestic bottles and jars, so wine, brewing and food demand keeps its output well used.
Premium and Food Formats Lead Growth
Beverage Bottles hold the largest share, but Food Jars grow at an estimated 3.0% CAGR and Spirits and Ready-to-Drink at an estimated 3.4% CAGR through 2035. Smaller grape intakes at Delegat Group and Foley Wines in 2026 slow wine bottle growth, which pushes suppliers towards other categories.
Policy and Reuse Reshape Glass Demand
Glass is losing share to lighter plastics and aluminium, yet reuse and recycled content give it a counter-argument. Kerbside costs and the container return debate will shape pricing and cullet supply.

The Expert Market Research’s report on the New Zealand Container Glass Market offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments.
Market Breakup by Product Type
Beverage Bottles lead on value, in our estimate, because wine, beer, cider and spirits take most glass, and Visy makes more than 700 million bottles and jars a year, mainly for wineries and beverage companies, as it said in April 2025. Food Jars are the fastest-growing type at an estimated 3.0% CAGR through 2035, as exporters of preserves and premium foods trade up. Sauce and Condiment Bottles grow steadily with retail demand. Specialty and Pharmaceutical Containers are small and often imported. Lion's July 2026 returnable Steinlager bottle shows durable bottle designs entering the beverage category.
Market Breakup by Application
Wine leads, in our estimate, with exports of 306.2 million litres worth NZ$2.108 billion in the 12 months to June 2026, although Delegat Group cut its harvest 19% in May 2026. Spirits and Ready-to-Drink is the fastest-growing application at an estimated 3.4% CAGR through 2035, helped by premium imports such as the Saverglass range. Beer and Cider gains from Lion's July 2026 returnable pilot in 48 stores. Food relies on jars and sauce bottles. Non-Alcoholic Beverages include juices, kombucha and sparkling waters in glass.
Market Breakup by Glass Colour
Green leads, in our estimate, because most Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and sparkling wine bottles use green glass. Flint is the fastest-growing colour at an estimated 2.9% CAGR through 2035, supported by premium whites, spirits and food jars where clarity matters. Amber serves beer, cider and some health products. Others include blue, antique green and opaque specialty glass. Visy said in May 2026 that colour-sorted kerbside glass has improved recovery, and in September 2026 WasteMINZ noted only about 46% of glass was recycled into new bottles.
Market Breakup by Region
Auckland dominates, in our estimate, because Visy's glass site and many beverage and food bottlers are based there, and it grows at an estimated 2.3% CAGR through 2035 from a large base. Canterbury is the fastest-growing region at an estimated 3.1%, as North Canterbury added 15 hectares of producing vines in the 2026 vineyard report. Wellington grows at 2.5%, supported by Wairarapa wine. Waikato grows at 2.8% on dairy-linked food. Rest of New Zealand, including Marlborough, grows at 2.6%.
| CAGR 2026 to 2035, Market by Region | Growth Rate |
| Auckland | 2.3 % |
| Wellington | 2.5 % |
| Canterbury | 3.1 % |
| Waikato | 2.8 % |
| Rest of New Zealand (incl. Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Otago) | 2.6 % |
Competition combines one local furnace operator, specialist importers and powerful brand owners that set specifications. Entry barriers include furnace capital, access to recycled cullet, freight costs and long-standing relationships with wineries, brewers and food exporters.
Visy
Visy, the privately owned packaging and recycling group headquartered in Melbourne, runs the Auckland glass site that took over the former O-I operation. It collects glass from 50 councils and remanufactures more than 700 million bottles and jars a year. On 4 May 2026 it reported a 70% average recycled content for 2025, the second year running, and named Aaron Ashby New Zealand Country Lead.
Delegat Group
Delegat Group, the Auckland-based winemaker behind Oyster Bay, is a major buyer of wine bottles. On 19 May 2026 it reported a 2026 harvest of 38,255 tonnes, 19% below 47,461 tonnes, calling it a managed reduction after two large vintages. It said stock levels should return to normal, which points to steadier but lower bottle purchasing.
Foley Wines
Foley Wines, based in Renwick, Marlborough, owns Grove Mill, Vavasour, Te Kairanga, Martinborough Vineyard and Mt Difficulty. On 29 May 2026 it reported a harvest of 8,012 tonnes, down 7% from 8,638 tonnes, with yields slightly lower but described as in the sweet spot for quality. Its multi-region range creates demand for premium green and flint bottles.
Lion
Lion, the Sydney-headquartered brewer with a large New Zealand business, brews Steinlager and other brands. On 2 July 2026 trade press reported it was piloting a 330 millilitre returnable Steinlager bottle in 48 Super Liquor stores across Auckland, with crates from recycled plastic and Datacom-built tracking. An evaluation found a 64% lower lifecycle carbon footprint.
Other players operating in the New Zealand container glass market include Saverglass, Croxsons, Villa Maria, DB Breweries, and Pernod Ricard Winemakers, alongside importers, wine and spirits bottlers, craft brewers, food exporters and recycling firms supplying or consuming glass containers across New Zealand.
Competition rests on furnace access, cullet supply, imported premium ranges and brand owner specifications rather than price alone, while reuse pilots could reshape purchasing patterns.
