The Australia dark fibre network market covers unlit optical fibre leased, sold under indefeasible rights of use or provisioned as direct spectrum across metropolitan rings, intercity routes, subsea landing backhaul and regional links. Customers light the fibre with their own equipment, controlling capacity, latency and security without sharing a carrier's managed service.
In 2025, the market is valued at AUD 1150.00 million and is forecast to grow at a (CAGR) of 8.60%, reaching AUD 2624.19 million by 2035. Demand rests on hyperscale data centre growth, carrier backhaul, enterprise and government network sovereignty, and new subsea cables that need diverse terrestrial paths, with lit wavelength and managed services excluded.

2026-2035
The Australia dark fibre network market is an infrastructure-led business in which a handful of route owners sell scarce, hard-to-duplicate fibre to carriers, data centre operators, enterprises and governments. Pricing reflects route diversity, duct availability and proximity to data centres rather than bandwidth alone.
Three forces shape the outlook: artificial intelligence workloads pushing data centre capacity, new intercity builds that end a long period of constrained supply, and subsea cables landing in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Darwin that need onward terrestrial paths.
In July 2025, Vocus completed its purchase of TPG Telecom's fibre assets. In October 2026, Telstra InfraCo activated its Perth to Sydney route, and in September 2026 Vocus announced a Brisbane to Darwin route.
The market is moving from scarce, point-to-point leases towards national, ducted routes that give carriers and data centre operators more choice and resilience. Metro fibre remains the largest type, while long-haul intercity fibre advances fastest as new capital-to-capital builds enter service. Dark fibre leases keep the biggest share, with indefeasible rights of use gaining ground among hyperscalers seeking long-term control. Data centres and hyperscalers grow quickest among end users, and telecom carriers stay the largest. New South Wales leads, with Western Australia growing fastest on subsea landings and Perth data centre demand. Supply additions and artificial intelligence workloads underpin a strong high single-digit outlook.

Revenue is on course to more than double, from AUD 1,150.00 million in 2025 to AUD 2,624.19 million in 2035 at an 8.6% CAGR. Hyperscale campuses, new intercity builds and diverse subsea landings make demand for unlit fibre durable.
Intercity, Rights of Use and Data Centres Lead
Long-haul intercity fibre grows at an estimated 10.4% CAGR, indefeasible rights of use at 9.4% and data centres and hyperscalers at 11.2% through 2035. Buyers favour long-term control of routes, while operators need diverse capital-to-capital paths.
New Supply Reshapes Competition
Ownership change and large ducted builds are altering who controls scarce routes. Buyers with long planning horizons gain from more route choice, while owners compete on diversity, speed of delivery and access to data centres.

The Expert Market Research’s report on the Australia Dark Fibre Network Market offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments.
Market Breakup by Fibre Type
Metro Fibre leads revenue through campus-to-campus rings in Sydney and Melbourne that join data centres, exchanges and enterprise sites. Long-Haul Intercity Fibre grows fastest at an estimated 10.4% CAGR, because Telstra InfraCo activated its Perth to Sydney route in October 2026 and Vocus announced a AUD 500 million Sydney to Melbourne route in July 2026. Subsea Landing and Backhaul Fibre links cable stations to data centres, and SUBCO declared SMAP ready for service in June 2026. Regional and Remote Fibre covers mining, agricultural and northern routes, including the Brisbane to Darwin plan announced in September 2026.
Market Breakup by Provisioning Model
Dark Fibre Lease keeps the largest share because carriers and enterprises prefer flexible multi-year terms on metro and intercity pairs. Indefeasible Right of Use grows fastest at an estimated 9.4% CAGR, as hyperscalers and carriers seek long-term control of strategic routes, a pattern reinforced by Vocus completing its AUD 5.25 billion fibre acquisition in July 2025. Direct Spectrum and Managed Wavelength lets customers buy a share of a fibre pair or a managed channel, a model Telstra InfraCo introduced on its first route in June 2025 and serves buyers wanting less equipment.
Market Breakup by End User
Telecom Carriers and Internet Service Providers form the largest end user, using unlit fibre for backhaul, mobile transport and wholesale broadband, with Superloop reporting 21.6% revenue growth in August 2026. Data Centres and Hyperscalers grow fastest at an estimated 11.2% CAGR, supported by NEXTDC's 740.1 MW of contracted utilisation reported in August 2026 and AirTrunk's December 2025 Melbourne plans. Enterprise and Financial Services buy private rings for latency and security. Government and Research covers defence, health and education networks, including national research traffic carried for universities.
Market Breakup by Region
New South Wales dominates through Sydney's concentration of data centres, cable landings and head offices, and grows at an estimated 8.2% CAGR through 2035. Victoria follows at 9.1%, lifted by AirTrunk's MEL2 plans announced in December 2025. Queensland grows at 9.0% on Brisbane data centres and the Brisbane to Darwin route announced in September 2026. Western Australia is the fastest-growing region at an estimated 10.0%, driven by Perth subsea landings and the Perth to Sydney route activated in October 2026. South Australia grows at 8.8% as SMAP lands in Adelaide. Others covers Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory at 7.4%.

| Queensland | 9.0 % |
| Western Australia | 10.0 % |
| South Australia | 8.8 % |
| Others (incl. Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory) | 7.4 % |
Competition spans route owners, wholesale carriers and data centre operators with fibre arms. Barriers include duct access, construction cost, approvals, route diversity, and the ability to connect data centres, cable stations and enterprise buildings.
Telstra InfraCo
Telstra InfraCo, the infrastructure unit of Telstra Group, headquartered in Melbourne, owns fibre, ducts and exchanges and sells dark fibre, direct spectrum and wavelengths. On 25 June 2025 it opened the first route of its intercity network, and in October 2026 it activated Perth to Sydney. About 9,000 km of 14,000 km is laid under an AUD 1.8 billion programme.
Vocus
Vocus, headquartered in Sydney, serves enterprise, government and wholesale customers with fibre, subsea capacity and data centre connectivity. It completed the AUD 5.25 billion TPG Telecom fibre acquisition on 31 July 2025, giving it more than 50,000 km of owned fibre. In September 2026 it announced a 4,000 km Brisbane to Darwin route.
Macquarie Technology Group
Macquarie Technology Group, headquartered in Sydney, combines data centres, cloud, government services and telecom, including fibre connectivity at its Macquarie Park campus. On 27 August 2026 it reported EBITDA of AUD 115.9 million for the year to 30 June 2026. Its IC3 SuperWest data centre is due to open in September 2026.
Superloop
Superloop, headquartered in Brisbane, operates fibre, subsea and wholesale network assets alongside consumer and business broadband. In August 2026 it reported revenue of AUD 664.3 million, up 21.6%, and underlying EBITDA of AUD 122.7 million. Its Supercharge 2029 strategy targets revenue above AUD 1 billion.
Other players operating in the Australia dark fibre network market include TPG Telecom, Optus, AARNet, AirTrunk, and SUBCO, alongside NEXTDC, regional fibre builders, state-owned utilities and specialist metro carriers supplying unlit fibre, spectrum and cable-landing backhaul across Australia.
Competition rests on route ownership, diversity and delivery speed rather than price alone. Large owners hold scale, while challengers compete through new builds, data centre access and flexible commercial terms.
