The New Zealand used car market covers pre-owned passenger cars, SUVs and light vans sold through franchised dealers, independent dealers, auctions, online marketplaces and private sales. It is shaped by the country's open border to used Japanese imports, which means a large share of the fleet arrives second-hand from Japan and is later traded again on the domestic market.
In 2025, the market is valued at USD 5600.00 million and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 3.40%, reaching USD 7823.36 million by 2035. Growth is driven by 6,956 used passenger imports registered in February 2026, a fleet that is overwhelmingly Japanese-built, and the steady move of buyers towards hybrid and electric used vehicles.
Compound Annual Growth Rate
3.4%
Value in USD million
2026-2035
The New Zealand used car market is reshaping rather than shrinking. Buyers are trading down from a costly new car market, dealers are consolidating, and a fuel price shock in 2026 is pushing demand towards hybrids and plug-in models while diesel and large petrol vehicles soften.
Three forces shape the market: used Japanese imports, which supply the lower end of the fleet; vehicle policy, as the Clean Vehicle Standard sets charges that importers may pass on to buyers; and a shrinking dealer base, with registered dealers down 26% to 2,608 in July 2026.
In February 2026 the Motor Trade Association lobbied for a ten-year age limit on used imports by 2030, and in August 2026 the Government confirmed it would keep the Clean Vehicle Standard with separate targets for used imports.
The market is moving from a simple price-led import model towards one where finance, warranties, vehicle history checks and electrified powertrains decide who wins. Domestic trade-in vehicles lead in value because they pass through dealers and private sales repeatedly, while used Japanese imports feed the affordable end of the market. Plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles advance fastest as fuel prices bite and the first large cohorts of electrified cars reach second owners. Online marketplaces and auctions gain share from private sales and traditional yards. Auckland remains the largest region, and Waikato grows quickest on logistics and new dealer sites. Policy changes to the Clean Vehicle Standard and dealer consolidation point to a durable change in how used cars are sourced and sold rather than a cyclical swing.

Import Pipeline and Fleet Depth Underpin Demand
Revenue is on course to expand by about 40% across the decade, from USD 5,600.00 million in 2025 to USD 7,823.36 million in 2035 at a 3.4% CAGR. A fleet of about 3.65 million passenger cars and vans as at January 2025, of which roughly 2.25 million came from Japan, keeps resale and trade-in activity recurring.
Electrified and Off-Lease Stock Lead Growth
Domestic Trade-In Vehicles hold the largest share, but Plug-In Hybrid and Battery Electric vehicles grow at an estimated 8.2% CAGR and Ex-Lease and Ex-Rental Vehicles at an estimated 4.3% CAGR through 2035. Rental fleets made up about 30% of passenger registrations in August 2026, which builds future off-rental supply.
Fuel Shock and Policy Reset Change Buying Patterns
Fuel prices began rising in March 2026, and buyers moved towards efficient hybrids and electric models. Dealers faced thinner vehicle margins, and used importers pressed the Government for relief from emissions charges.

The Expert Market Research’s report on the New Zealand Used Car Market offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments.
Market Breakup by Vehicle Source
Domestic Trade-In Vehicles lead on value, in our estimate, because the same cars pass through dealers and private buyers repeatedly. Used Japanese Imports supply the affordable end, with 6,560 units arriving from Japan in August 2026. Ex-Lease and Ex-Rental Vehicles grow fastest at an estimated 4.3% CAGR through 2035, as rental fleets made up about 30% of passenger registrations in August 2026 and Turners noted ex-lease consignments were down 14% in July. Others include used imports from Australia, at 135 units in August 2026, and the United States.
Market Breakup by Powertrain
Petrol leads in value, in our estimate, as most older fleet vehicles still run on it. Diesel softens as Turners reported weaker demand for diesel and larger petrol vehicles in August 2026. Hybrid grows strongly, helped by Toyota New Zealand's 70.4% hybrid share of first-half 2026 sales and a steady stream of Japanese hybrid imports. Plug-In Hybrid and Battery Electric grows fastest at an estimated 8.2% CAGR through 2035, with Tesla and BYD leading electric registrations in the first half of 2026.
Market Breakup by Sales Channel
Independent Dealers and Importers lead, in our estimate, because they handle most used Japanese imports, although their number is shrinking. Franchised Dealerships serve certified and late-model stock, and in September 2026 Armstrong's Group agreed to add two Auckland Ford sites. Private Sales remain sizeable but lose share to listed stock with finance and warranties. Auctions and Online Marketplaces grow fastest at an estimated 4.8% CAGR through 2035, supported by Turners, which sells about 40,000 vehicles a year and opened a NZD 200 million funding warehouse in October 2025.
Market Breakup by Region
Auckland dominates, in our estimate, as the largest population centre and port of entry for imports, and Turners is adding a Manukau site and a replacement Drury commercial branch. It grows at an estimated 3.2% CAGR through 2035 from a large, mature base. Waikato is the fastest-growing region at an estimated 3.9%, with a replacement Hamilton Te Rapa branch planned. Canterbury grows at 3.6%, following the three new Christchurch branches Turners reported in June 2025. Rest of New Zealand grows at 3.3%, with Tauranga, Whanganui and Hastings sites planned. Wellington grows at 3.1%, in our estimate, on a mature customer base.
| CAGR 2026 to 2035, Market by Region | Growth Rate |
| Auckland | 3.2 % |
| Wellington | 3.1 % |
| Canterbury | 3.6 % |
| Waikato | 3.9 % |
| Rest of New Zealand | 3.3 % |
Competition combines the listed Turners, the Toyota franchise network, large dealer groups and online marketplaces. Entry barriers include access to Japanese auction supply, finance and insurance capability, compliance with import rules and trade-in volume that feeds retail stock.
Turners Automotive Group
Turners Automotive Group, headquartered in Auckland, is New Zealand's largest buyer and seller of used vehicles, selling about 40,000 vehicles a year and also running finance, insurance and credit management. At its annual meeting on 19 August 2026 it reported revenue of NZD 451.2 million for the year to March 2026 and committed new sites in Manukau, Tauranga, Whanganui and Hastings.
Toyota New Zealand
Toyota New Zealand, based in Palmerston North, distributes Toyota and Lexus vehicles and is the main source of hybrids that later enter the used market. Trade press reported on 6 July 2026 that hybrids made up 70.4% of its first-half 2026 sales, with battery electric registrations of 2,738 in June 2026, while plug-in hybrid versions of the RAV4 also began selling.
Colonial Motor Company
Colonial Motor Company is an NZX-listed dealer group selling new and used vehicles across several franchise brands through a national dealership network. On 22 September 2026 it warned of overcrowding in the new car market, expecting brand consolidation as over a dozen Chinese brands arrived in two years. Its trade-in volumes feed late-model used stock for resale.
Trade Me
Trade Me, based in Wellington, operates the online marketplace whose Motors section lists used cars from dealers and private sellers. In October 2026 its Motors section offered a price guide in beta, and its monthly Automotive Insights Report tracks top-demand used vehicles up to 15 years old using the AutoGrab platform. Online listings give buyers price comparison that is pushing dealers towards transparent pricing.
Other players operating in the New Zealand used car market include Armstrong's Group, Giltrap Group, Ingham Driven, BYD New Zealand, and Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand, alongside independent import yards, regional dealers, auction houses, finance providers and private sellers supplying used cars across New Zealand.
Competition rests on import sourcing, trade-in supply, finance capability and online reach rather than price alone, while dealer consolidation and new brands could reshape positions.
