The Australia large language model (LLM) market covers the foundation models, licences, application programming interface usage, fine-tuning and managed deployment services that let Australian organisations generate, summarise, translate and reason over text, code and documents. It spans proprietary and open-weight models, hosted on public cloud, sovereign cloud or on-premises infrastructure, and sold to banks, agencies, hospitals, telecommunications groups and retailers.
In 2025, the market is valued at AUD 739.79 million in 2025 and is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 28.00%, reaching AUD 8733.90 million by 2035. Growth is driven by enterprise rollouts of conversational assistants, a national plan that backs adoption, and local compute that keeps sensitive data onshore.

The Australia large language model (LLM) market is moving from pilots to production. Large banks, agencies and platforms now deploy assistants to tens of thousands of staff, while global model makers open Sydney offices and commit local infrastructure to serve regulated customers.
Three forces are shaping the market: policy, with the National AI Plan and the new AI Safety Institute; sovereignty, as buyers demand onshore processing and local training; and adoption, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting in June 2026 that around 12% of businesses used AI and 35% of large businesses did.
In December 2025 OpenAI and NEXTDC signed a memorandum for a hyperscale AI campus in Western Sydney. In March 2026 Anthropic announced its Sydney office, and in April 2026 Microsoft committed A$25 billion to Australian AI infrastructure.
The market is moving from experimentation towards governed production use, with buyers weighing capability, cost, residency and auditability. Proprietary models lead on breadth, while open-weight and domain-specific models gain where organisations need control, customisation and lower inference cost. Public cloud interfaces remain the entry point, yet private and sovereign deployments advance fastest as regulated sectors insist on onshore processing. Banking leads adoption today, and government grows quickest as public service tools reach staff. New South Wales remains the largest region, and Victoria grows quickest on research depth and local model builders. National policy, local infrastructure and enterprise agent platforms point to a durable shift in how work is done, rather than a short experiment, even as power supply, skills and model costs remain constraints.

The Expert Market Research’s report on the Australia Large Language Model (LLM) Market offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments.
Market Breakup by Model Type
Proprietary Closed-Source LLMs lead on value, in our estimate, because large enterprises buy managed access from global providers, as in Commonwealth Bank's ChatGPT Enterprise rollout of January 2026. Open-Source and Open-Weight LLMs gain where control matters, such as Maincode's Apache-licensed Maincoder released in January 2026. Domain-Specific and Sovereign LLMs grow fastest at an estimated 31.5% CAGR through 2035, supported by Sovereign Australia AI's September 2025 order of 256 Nvidia B200 processors. Others include small language models and speech or multimodal variants that sit beside text-focused products.
Market Breakup by Deployment Mode
Public Cloud API leads, in our estimate, because most buyers start with hosted interfaces such as Claude Sonnet 4.5 on Amazon Bedrock in Sydney, available since October 2025. Private and Sovereign Cloud grows fastest at an estimated 32.0% CAGR through 2035, as OpenAI and NEXTDC planned a sovereign campus in December 2025 and Microsoft committed A$25 billion in April 2026. Hybrid Deployment suits banks that split sensitive and general workloads. On-Premises and Edge serves defence and health users, and compact open models run on laptops, as Maincode showed in January 2026.
Market Breakup by End-Use Industry
Banking, Financial Services and Insurance leads, in our estimate, with Commonwealth Bank's January 2026 rollout of ChatGPT Enterprise to nearly 50,000 staff. Government and Public Sector grows fastest at an estimated 30.5% CAGR through 2035, as GovAI Chat trials began in April 2026 for public servants. Healthcare and Life Sciences adds clinical documentation and imaging reporting. IT, Telecom and Media is the most advanced adopter, at 38% of firms using AI in the Bureau of Statistics release of June 2026. Retail and E-commerce uses assistants for service and content, and Others cover education, mining and legal services.
Market Breakup by Region
New South Wales dominates, in our estimate, as Sydney hosts the new offices of Anthropic and OpenAI, the NEXTDC S7 campus planned at Eastern Creek and most head offices of large buyers, and it grows at an estimated 27.0% CAGR through 2035 from a large base. Victoria is the fastest-growing region at an estimated 29.4%, helped by builders such as Melbourne-based Maincode. Western Australia grows at 28.8% on resources and mining uses, Queensland at 28.3%, and Rest of Australia at 27.6%, with public service demand in Canberra.
| CAGR 2026 to 2035, Market by Region | Growth Rate |
| New South Wales | 27.0 % |
| Victoria | 29.4 % |
| Queensland | 28.3 % |
| Western Australia | 28.8 % |
| Others (Rest of Australia) | 27.6 % |
Competition combines global model makers, hyperscale cloud platforms and a small group of Australian model builders. Entry barriers include compute access, onshore hosting, security accreditation, enterprise sales reach and trust with banks, agencies and health providers.
OpenAI
OpenAI, based in San Francisco, supplies ChatGPT Enterprise and its model interfaces to Australian organisations. In December 2025 it signed a memorandum with NEXTDC for a hyperscale AI campus at Eastern Creek in Sydney, with a first phase planned for the second half of next year. Commonwealth Bank said in January 2026 that it was rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise to nearly 50,000 employees and developing AI skills content with OpenAI for small businesses.
Anthropic
Anthropic, based in San Francisco, develops the Claude family of models used by enterprises, developers and public bodies. On 10 March 2026 it announced a Sydney office, its fourth in Asia-Pacific, focused on enterprise, startup and research customers and naming Canva, Quantium and Commonwealth Bank as customers. It said it was exploring expanded compute capacity in Australia, initially through existing third-party data centres to meet data residency needs.
Microsoft
Microsoft, headquartered in Redmond, Washington, sells Azure OpenAI services and Copilot to Australian enterprises and agencies. On 23 April 2026 it announced a commitment of about A$25 billion to expand Australian AI infrastructure, security and skills, with a government memorandum behind it. An April 2026 update to its Copilot plans said local inferencing for Microsoft 365 Copilot in Australia was now expected later this year.
Amazon Web Services
Amazon Web Services, headquartered in Seattle, offers Amazon Bedrock, a managed service for foundation models from several providers, in its Sydney region. In October 2025 it made Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.5 available through Bedrock in Australia, made Bedrock AgentCore generally available there and added Trainium2 chips locally. It plans to invest AU$20 billion in Australian data centre infrastructure through the end of the decade.
Other players operating in the Australia large language model (LLM) market include Google, NEXTDC, Sovereign Australia AI, Maincode, and Canva, alongside open-model communities, systems integrators, cloud resellers, domain-specific start-ups and in-house data teams supplying model-based tools to banks, agencies, hospitals and retailers across Australia.
Competition rests on model capability, onshore hosting, security accreditation and enterprise sales reach rather than price alone, while sovereign alternatives and open models are widening buyer choice.
